How to Gauge Swatch

Tutorial Overview

When working with a new yarn, you will need a gauge swatch. This is to determine whether your needle is the right size for your yarn, and whether you will achieve the same size as the pattern. Once your tension matches the pattern, your finished item will match the measurements stated in your pattern. If your gauge is tighter, your finished item will be smaller than stated. And if your gauge is looser, then your finished item may be larger than expected and could require more yarn.

Step-by-step guide

Step 1:

Here you can see two swatches, one in a thicker yarn, the other in a thinner yarn. They are similar in size, but there's a big difference in the amount of stitches and rows there are.

Step 2:

To start, our instructions will tell you to cast on a set amount of stitches and work for a specific number of rows. The finished swatch will be larger than 10 cm by 10 cm when laid flat. For accuracy reasons, you will measure within the swatch.

Step 3:

Using a tape measure, carefully count the stitches and rows worked within the 10 cm by 10 cm square.

Step 4:

If the numbers match the tension we have provided, you are good to go!

If you have more stitches and/or rows, it means you have a tighter tension and you will need bigger needles.

If you have less stitches and/or rows, it means you have a looser tension and you will need smaller needles.
