How to Gauge Swatch

When working with a new yarn you will need a gauge swatch. This is to determine whether your hook is the right size for your yarn, and whether you will achieve the same size as the pattern.

Once your tension matches the pattern, your finished item will match the measurements stated in your pattern. If your gauge is tighter, your finished item will be smaller than stated. And if your gauge is looser, then your finished item may be larger than expected and could require more yarn.

In the video you can see two swatches. One in a thicker yarn, the other in a thinner yarn. They are similar in size but there's a big difference in the amount of stitches and rows there are.

Step-by-step guide

Step 1:

To start, our instructions will tell you to create a foundation chain with a set amount of stitches and work for a specific number of rows.

Step 2:

The finished swatch will be larger than 10cm by 10cm when laid flat. For accuracy reasons you will measure within the swatch.

Step 3:

Using a tape measure, carefully count the stitches and rows worked within the 10cm by 10cm square.

Step 4:

If the numbers match the tension we have provided you are good to go.

If you have more stitches and/or rows it means you have a tighter tension and you will need a bigger hook.

If you have less stitches and/or rows it means you have a looser tension and you will need a smaller hook.
