Step-by-step guide

Step 1:

To create our first puff stitch, we'll start with a slip knot.

Step 2:

Then we'll make 3 chain stitches.

Step 3:

Now elongate the loop on your hook.

Step 4:

Yarn over, then insert the hook into the first chain stitch made.

Step 5:

Yarn over and draw a loop through, and up to the height of the first loop.

Step 6:

Repeat this a second time:

  • Yarn over, and insert your hook into the same chain stitch.
  • Then yarn over again and draw a loop through.
  • Bring the loop up to the height of the previous loops drawn.

Repeat this as many times as your pattern states.

We'll repeat these steps until we have 5 loops on our hook.

Step 7:

Now you'll yarn over once more. With your left hand, hold the yarn strand of this final yarn over just below the hook.

Step 8:

Then pull the yarn through all 5 loops on your hook.

Step 9:

Let go of the yarn strand held, and close this puff stitch with one chain stitch.

You have now completed the first puff stitch.

Step 10:

To start the next one, elongate the loop on your hook.

Step 11:

Yarn over, then insert your hook into the top of the last puff stitch.

Step 12:

Yarn over and draw a loop through, and up to the height of the first loop.

Step 13:

Repeat this a second time:

  • Yarn over, and insert your hook into the same stitch.
  • Then yarn over again and draw a loop through.
  • Bring the loop up to the height of the previous loops drawn.

We'll repeat these steps again until we have 5 loops on our hook.

Step 14:

Yarn over once more. Hold the yarn strand of this yarn over just below the hook.

Step 15:

Then pull the yarn through all 5 loops on your hook.

Step 16:

Let go of the yarn strand held, and close your puff stitch with one chain stitch.

You have now completed your second puff stitch.

Continue to repeat these steps as many times as required in your puff stitch foundation.
