Hello crafters,
Happy Halloween! The clocks have gone back, there is a chill in the air and the hint of festivities on the horizon. It’s the perfect time of year for a spot of Halloween knitting or crochet! We love seeing all the images of crocheted and knitted pumpkin decor popping up on social channels at this time of year, but we thought we’d add a little Halloween magic into the mix with a friendly little ghost 👻 and spooky bat 🦇crochet amigurumi pattern. Because who doesn’t love free Halloween crafting patterns?
Each otherworldly crocheted critter requires just one ball of The Lil’ Merino yarn to complete and we’ve put together a Halloween Special: The Lil’ Merino Bundle to get you started. The free ghost and bat crochet pattern are also available as a downloadable pdf here.
We hope you enjoy making these cute amigurumi Halloween creatures as much as we enjoyed creating the patterns. Wishing you a very happy, craft filled Halloween!
All instructions in these free patterns are given in UK terminology. For example, ‘double crochet (dc)’ is the same stitch as the American ‘single crochet (sc)’. For all other American equivalent abbreviations, see the below terms in brackets.
ch - chain
** - repeat sequence inside the **
Familiarise yourself with the basic techniques before starting the main patterns. Visit our online ‘How To’ video tutorials to learn these techniques in this order: slip knot, foundation chain, magic ring, double crochet, half treble crochet, treble crochet, increase stitch and slip stitch.
Crochet a gauge swatch before you begin to check that your tension, hook and yarn produce the same size in these patterns. Your tension swatch should be 18 stitches x 20 rows = 10cm x 10cm, using a 4.5mm crochet hook, in double crochet.
If your tension is too tight, we recommend using a slightly bigger hook. If your tension is too loose, we recommend using a slightly smaller hook.
Completed ghost measures approx. 9cm (H) x 6cm (W).
Completed bat measures approx. 9cm (H) x 6cm (W).
The ghost is crocheted in the round, with the base separately then sewn together.
Using the white yarn, start with a magic ring:
1st rnd: 6dc into the magic ring. (6 sts)13th rnd: Repeat *ss, (1htr, 1tr), (1tr, 1htr), ss* to end of rnd. (32 sts)
Cut yarn, tie off, and weave in all ends.
Close rnd with a ss.
Leave yarn tail approximately 4 times the circumference of the base panel, cut yarn and tie off.
With the black thread, carefully embroider the ghost’s eyes onto the centre of the body only. Position them approximately 7 rnds down from the top centre, and sew the eyes over 2 rnds, with 3 stitches between them. Weave in all the ends.
Place a good amount of stuffing into the body of the ghost, and with the back of the ghost facing you, continue with the yarn tail from base panel, *ss the RS edge of the base and body as one stitch. Repeat from * until you have worked around the circle.
Tip: This joining edge would be the round just before the curly edge.
Tie off and weave in all ends.
To maximise its scary effect, don’t forget to attach a piece of string to the top of the amigurumi to allow it to float around your home!
The bat is crocheted in the round, with the wings and ears crocheted in rows separately then sewn together.
Using the black yarn, start with a magic ring:
1st rnd: 6dc into the magic ring. (6 sts)14th rnd: dc2tog to end of rnd. (6 sts)
Cut yarn, thread yarn tail through 6 sts from 14th rnd and tighten the opening like a drawstring. Weave in all ends.
Using the black yarn, ch2.
1st rnd: (2dc, 2ch, 2dc) into 2nd chain from hook.6th rnd: 1dc into 2nd st from hook, 2dc, 1htr, 1tr.
Leave yarn tail approximately 10cm, cut yarn and tie off. Do not weave in the yarn tail as this will be needed for sewing later on.
Using the black yarn, ch4.
1st rnd: 1htr into the 3rd chain from hook, 1htr. (2 sts)3rd rnd: dc2tog. (1 st)
Cut yarn, tie off. Do not weave in the yarn tail as this will be needed for sewing later on.
With the white thread, carefully embroider the bat’s teeth onto the centre of the body only. Position them approximately 8 rnds down from the top centre, and sew the teeth over 2 rnds, with 4 stitches between them. Weave in the ends.
Place the corner of the wing with the yarn tail in the centre back of the body, around 7th rnd from the top centre. Allow around 2 stitches space between the 2 wings. Sew on securely, tie off and weave in all ends.
Place the wider base of the ears on the top of the body, with 2 rnds as space between the inside of the 2 ears. Sew on securely, tie off and weave in all ends.
To maximise its scary effect, don’t forget to attach a piece of string to the top of the amigurumi to allow it to float around your home!
